The lake boasts an incredibly high salinity (salt level), which creates the perfect environment for a specialized microalgae called Dunaliella salina. When this algae is exposed to high amounts of direct sunlight, it produces beta-carotene that penetrates the water reflecting a brilliant, true bubble-gum pink back to the surface.
